Red Cross says need is "acute" for A positive, B positive, and O positive blood donations

August 16, 2010

The New York-Penn region of American Red Cross Blood Services says there's an acute need for blood donors with A positive, B positive, and O positive blood types. The organization cites school breaks and family vacations as leading to a drop in routine donations, and urges Central New York residents to make an appointment to give blood soon.

Donation opportunities in the Ithaca area include New York State Electric & Gas on Dryden Road on August 18th, the Newfield Community Building on August 21st, and Cayuga Medical Center on August 23rd. See www.redcrossblood.org/nyp for more details or to make an appointment.

Blood donors throughout the month of August are eligible to win a free Acer netbook computer. One donor will be selected each day of the month to win a netbook, thanks to an arrangement the American Red Cross has made with Staples.

Healthy individuals at least 17 years of age and who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood every 56 days. The American Red Cross New York-Penn region serves the blood needs of 120 area hospitals.
