A man attempting to break into John's Convenience Store on West State Street was arrested early this morning when police officers responded to an alarm activation at the business. The Ithaca Police Department says they discovered damage to the glass front door of the store, and then. found Jonathan P. Dobbs hiding in bushes near the property.

Photo provided by IPD.Police say they responded to the alarm activation at 1:03am, earlier than the other burglary attempts made overnight, ruling Dobbs out as a suspect in the incidents at Purity Ice Cream and Subway. "We are certainly looking at this person as a person who may have committed one or more of the reported burglaries," says IPD public information officer Jamie Wiliamson, "but there are a number of leads that we are pursuing, also."
Officers who responded to John's Convenience Store viewed the business's surveillance video, which showed Dobbs "repeatedly striking the glass doors in an attempt to break out the glass and make entry." Dobbs is in custody awaiting arraignment in Ithaca City Court on charges of attempted burglary in the third degree and criminal mischief in the third degree.
Police this weekend also found groups of individuals on the roofs of buildings in Ithaca's west end, though say there was no evidence those people had attempted to enter the businesses. "We are not focusing our investigative efforts on any one specific person or group of people," Williamson adds.
