Clinton Street detoured in Ithaca's west end as NYSEG installs gas trunk line

August 19, 2015 by Rachel Cera

Were you bored without the Route 96B detour on South Hill after it reopened last week? The City of Ithaca says New York State Electric & Gas is installing a "large gas trunk line" in Ithaca's west end that will create detours the next couple of days.

Ithaca's assistant superintendent of public works, Ray Benjamin, tells us NYSEG's contractor, DSS, is planning to install the gas line from West Green Street to North Titus Street, down South Plain Street.

"They are impacting our plans to mill and pave Clinton Street from Cayuga to Plain," Mr. Benjamin says. "We have asked them to do the Clinton Street crossing first so we can proceed with our work." Clinton Street serves as Route 96B between the west end and downtown Ithaca, before 96B heads south up South Aurora Street towards Ithaca College. Route 96B was closed on south hill for over two months while City and NYSEG contractor crews worked on services and paving.

"The pipe is large enough that it comes in sections and has to be welded," Mr. Benjamin added. Detours are likely today and tomorrow. "The contractor is well aware of students returning this week," he says. "They are the same crew we were pushing up South Aurora."
