Ithaca lands on top-ten list of most expensive places to raise a family

August 27, 2015 by Rachel Cera

We're always hearing about Ithaca being on the list for best this or most that, but this isn't one to be proud of. MarketWatch has just named Ithaca among the ten most expensive places to raise a family in the United States.

But this makes it all worth it, right? But this makes it all worth it, right? The publication says Ithaca lands on the list "due to high taxes and rents, and may be skewed slightly upward thanks to the costs of child care in New York state." (Their methodology used a statewide index of child care costs.)

Ithaca lands at #8 on the list below other areas of New York State, including New York City (no surprise), Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island, Westchester County, and the Hudson Valley. Also high on the list are Washington, D.C., coming in at number 1, and Honolulu, Hawaii.

Five of the top ten locales being in New York State could be partly due to New York's unusual multiple layers of government, with the state divided into counties and townships, as well as incorporated cities and villages within them.
