Bravissimi! In 24-hour Giving Is Gorges fundraiser, over 100 non-profits benefit from over $100K in donations

August 29, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Smash success! As of midnight, 119 separate non-profit organizations in the Ithaca area had taken in a total of over $110,000 thanks to 974 donors who participated in the day-long Giving Is Gorges fundraising event.

The organizations included music, theatre, and art organizations. Human service and hunger relief causes. County library and County SPCA. Even a local news outlet. Through the power of social media, many of these organizations, big and small, were able to reach out to existing donors as well as fans who hadn't donated before, and take advantage of a centralized payment tool powered by GiveGab and the additional reach of a day-long effort that had days of promotional effort preceding it.

Ithaca Common Council member Deborah Mohlenhoff tells us, "I'm so amazed and impressed by our generous community!" She added, "On a day when we celebrated the reopening of the Ithaca Commons in the heart of the county, we demonstrated our commitment to community by investing in all these programs that enrich our quality of life every day."

For 24 hours on Friday, the Giving is Gorges web site accepted donations from anyone for any of the 121 Ithaca and Tompkins County area 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations who registered in advance, and fully 119 of those found support over the course of the day. Donors were given the option to cover credit card transaction processing and administrative fees so they needn't be deducted from the amount that will be distributed to the organizations over the next few days.

"As a small non-profit, we spend lots of our time fundraising solo," says Shannon MacCarrick, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties. "It's high time for the 'Giving Day' concept to come to Tompkins County." Similar day-long efforts at Ithaca College and Cornell University have been very successful. "The act of pulling together the Tompkins non-profit community toward one day of support will allow our missions to shine," MacCarrick says, "showing the collective impact that we have on the community. Individually we all do great work, but together, we are an even more powerful force for good."

Giving Is Gorges organizers include the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, the Association of Fundraising Professionals of the Finger Lakes, and the United Way of Tompkins County. The fundraiser was hosted online by GiveGab, a non-profit organizing platform that provides fundraising tools and volunteer-matching opportunities.
