Newfield fire officials say an electrical short may be responsible for an equipment fire at the Casella waste management facility on Route 13 south of Ithaca Saturday afternoon. Multiple fire departments responded to put out the blaze, which forced officials to close Route 13 in both directions.

They immediately called in the Enfield and Ithaca fire departments to assist with the fire, which could be seen for miles around.

Crews teamed up to close off Route 13 and run hoses across the highway to bring the fire under control. Officials say Casella was able to reopen their operation on Saturday afternoon, and Route 13 was reopened to through traffic, after about two hours.
