Community support meeting this afternoon in the wake of Cornell Prof. Ephrahim Garcia's death

September 11, 2014 by Mark H. Anbinder

Cornell University's College of Engineering has planned a community support meeting at 4:30 this afternoon in the wake of the death yesterday of Dr. Ephrahim Garcia, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the college.

The popular professor "was a wonderful colleague with a self-proclaimed desire to 'mix it up a bit,'" said engineering dean Lance R. Collins in a message to students, staff, and faculty of the college this morning. He had been working to model the flapping of bird wings, develop control systems for aircraft that could "morph," and build artificial muscles for walking robots.

Dr. Garcia advised three student project teams and "steadfastly supported aerospace in the department, and diversity causes across the college and university," said Collins.

The support meeting will be at 4:30pm on Thursday, September 11th in McManus Lounge on the first floor of Hollister Hall, on Cornell's Engineering Quad. Students may also reach out to Gannett Health Center's Counseling and Psychological Services office at 607-255-5155, and faculty and staff may call the Faculty Staff Assistance Program at 607-255-COPE or 607-255-2673.
