The national weather service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for Tompkins County and portions of surrounding counties until 2:30pm, and a tornado watch in effect until 7pm this evening. A wind advisory is already in effect until 6pm.
A ridge of thunderstorms approaching and crossing the Finger Lakes is expected to bring a severe thunderstorm near Locke by 1:36pm, and Moravia by 1:40pm. The severe thunderstorm warning covers southeastern Cayuga County, northern Cortland County, southern Onandaga County, and Tompkins County.
The national weather service says very little lightning will occur with this line of storms, but warns of heavy downpours and "very strong gusty winds." If you are in the path of this storm, seek shelter indoors and stay away from windows.
A wind advisory remains in effect until 6pm for most of Eastern New York and much of New England. Expect sustained winds of 20-30mph with gusts of 40-50mph likely, and localized gusts over 50mph are possible. Downed trees and power lines can be anticipated.
