Hector Street, Route 79 on west hill in the City of Ithaca, is closed on Wednesday afternoon and evening following a crash involving a large construction truck.

We're told no one was hurt in the collision, but emergency responders will have the road closed for a while so two large tow trucks from Charlie's Towing can remove the truck and trailer, and so a crew from NYSEG can replace a utility pole. Ithaca police estimate the road will be closed until about midnight.

The Tompkins County 911 center received multiple calls shortly before 4pm reporting the accident. A large paving company dump truck loaded with asphalt, towing a trailer that was carrying paving equipment, lost its brakes on the way down the Route 79 hill on the way into the City of Ithaca. The truck traveled up the embankment on the west side and struck some trees before crossing the oncoming lane of traffic and striking a utility pole and more trees. The trees stopped the truck from plummeting over the embankment towards Route 96.

The Ithaca Police Department says Hector Street is closed from the Floral Avenue intersection at the base of the hill up to Sunrise Road. Drivers can detour around the area using Route 96 and Vinegar Hill Road.
