Time to get your annual flu shot! Where to find one around Ithaca and Tompkins County

October 12, 2015 by Rachel Cera

Flu vaccinations are now available in Ithaca and Tompkins County, and the CDC recommends everyone six months of age and older get a flu shot, every year.

"It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop full protection against the flu," says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends getting a flu vaccine as soon as possible once they're available each fall, to protect yourself and your loved ones, especially those who are particularly susceptible to infection.

The CDC says vaccinations are especially important for children aged six months through four years, adults over 50, people with chronic pulmonary and cardiovascular disorders, residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities, and healthcare personnel.

The Tompkins County Health Department is now offering this season's flu vaccinations at their 55 Brown Road facility, on Tuesdays and Fridays, by appointment. Call 607-274-6616 during business hours for an appointment. The public is also welcome at a flu vaccination clinic at Lifelong on West Court Street in Ithaca on Tuesday, October 13, and should call 274-6616 for an appointment. These county provided vaccinations are covered for those under Medicare Part B, Medicaid, and BlueCross BlueShield coverage. For others, payment of the $35 fee is due at the time of vaccination, but most healthcare plans will reimburse this fee.

Cornell University offers walk-in flu vaccination clinics around campus, free to Cornell students, staff, faculty, and retirees, as well as student spouses and domestic partners with SHIP coverage. There is a $35 fee for student spouses and domestic partners without SHIP coverage. Other family members should seek vaccinations from their primary care providers. Coming up this week are clinics at Cornell's vet school atrium from 11am-3pm on Wednesday, and Seneca Place room 434 from 1-3pm on Thursday. Several more clinics are scheduled through early November, and Cornell community members can also call 607-255-5155 for an appointment for a vaccine at Gannett Health Center.

Several area pharmacies offer walk-in flu vaccinations at any time or nearly any time, including Rite Aid on Pine Tree Road or in Ithaca's southwest or northeast, Kinney Drugs in Ithaca's northeast or Fall Creek, CVS in Ithaca's west end, and Wegmans and Target pharmacies.
