Downed tree and wires divert Route 96 traffic on Ithaca's west hill

October 14, 2014 by Mark H. Anbinder

Update: Ithaca Fire Department says the affected section of Route 96 will be closed for about four hours.

High winds on an unually warm fall afternoon have knocked down a tree and power wires blocking one lane of traffic on Route 96. The tree came down shortly after 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The 600 block of Cliff Street, Route 96 on Ithaca's west hill, was originally reduced to one lane. Northbound traffic, heading up the lake from the Octopus, and southbound traffic, heading into the City of Ithaca, is being detoured onto Vinegar Hill and Route 79.

NYSEG says about 50 customers are without power, nearly all on Cliff Street. They have yet to estimate a time when power will be restored.

We suggest avoiding the area or selecting another route, such as Route 79 or Route 89, while crews work to repair downed power lines and clear the damaged tree.
