IPD hosting first-ever Community-Police BBQ for Ithaca

October 15, 2015 by Rachel Cera

The City of Ithaca Police Department and its leaders have tried lots of ways to ensure they're connecting with the community, and the latest effort is a community BBQ. The "first ever Community-IPD BBQ" will take place this Saturday from noon to 3pm at the Southside Community Center.

"I'm excited beyond words to connect and reconnect with the folks in our community," says Chief of Police John R. Barber about this Saturday's event. Chief Barber has also hosted several community coffee hours this year where he and Mayor Svante Myrick appear at area coffee shops to meet with community members. Unfortunately, IPD public information officer Jamie Williamson says, the realities of scheduling multiple people -- as well as a commercial venue willing to donate space -- has meant every such outing has been during hours when most people with full-time jobs are at work. The BBQ offers an opportunity for community members with day jobs, as well as families, to come out and meet Ithaca's police officers.

There will be burgers, hot dogs, and vegan options at the BBQ. Maybe they'll look like this veggie burger. There will be burgers, hot dogs, and vegan options at the BBQ. Maybe they'll look like this veggie burger."People in Ithaca need to know who the police officers are that are protecting and serving them," says Mayor Myrick. "I'll be there for sure."

IPD says they'll be serving hot dogs, hamburgers, vegan options, and "a wide array of other food," all free of charge. Community radio station WVBR will be on hand broadcasting from the event at 93.5FM and wvbr.com.

Update: On Saturday morning, Ithaca Police Department identified a long list of local businesses who have donated food and other supplies for the event: Buffalo Wild Wings, Collegetown Bagels, Cornell Orchards, Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin’ Donuts, Home Depot, Ithaca Bakery, Joe’s Restaurant, Lowe’s, McDonald’s, Mahogany Grill, Maxie’s Supper Club and Oyster Bar, Napoli Pizza, Purity Ice Cream, Rogan’s Corner, Shortstop Deli, The Nines, WalMart, and Wegmans.

The Southside Community Center is at 310 South Plain Street, southwest of Downtown Ithaca and the Ithaca Commons.
