Packed weekend for Big Red Hockey features United Way women's game and student-designed Lynah Faithful shirt

A student-designed t-shirt will greet the Lynah Faithful for the first full weekend of Cornell hockey of the brand new season. The Big Red women host a back-to-back pair against the nationally prominent Boston College Eagles, and the men have a pair of exhibitions on deck.

Junior Brielle Hohne, who's studying chemical and biomolecular engineering, came up with a t-shirt listing "five ways to know you're a member of the Lynah Faithful," the nickname for the legendary rink's legendarily intense fans. "Lynah Rink is very different when there's not a single empty seat," the longtime hockey fan says. "The energy just multiplies and you can get really into the game." The winning t-shirt designer earned free season tickets for this year's games, a Cornell Athletics prize package, and a meet-and-greet with the team.

Kicking off the weekend's action will be a pair of women's games, as the Big Red gets their regular season started against Boston College. The women posted a 3-2 win over defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport champion Western Ontario last Friday in exhibition play, and participated in Saturday's annual Red & White Scrimmage. The win, which featured goals from juniors Brianna Veerman and Kaitlin Doering, as well as freshman Pippy Gerace, helped land Cornell in the #9 position in this week's USCHO poll.

The Eagles have a head start on the year, with a perfect six wins under their belts so far. Cornell holds a 16-6-1 advantage in the all-time series against BC, though the Eagles took both games between the squads at home last fall.

This weekend's women's games are at 7pm on Friday and 3pm on Saturday, with the Saturday afternoon game serving as the team's annual United Way fundraiser game. A dollar will be donated to the United Way for each fan in attendance. Cornell students are admitted free, and tickets cost $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for Cornell staff and children K-12. Preschool children are admitted free.

For the men, the weekend features a pair of exhibitions against Ryerson and Laurentian, two Ontario universities. Cornell hasn't played against Ryerson before, and last faced Laurentian in 1971, when the Big Red took away an 11-2 win. The games are at 7pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday at Lynah Rink.

Correction: An earlier version of this article listed the start time of Sunday's second men's hockey game as 7pm based on an error in Cornell's weekend game notes. Sunday's game is at 2pm.
