Ithaca police report quick capture of Wednesday afternoon bank robber

October 31, 2014 by Rachel Cera

The Elmira Savings Bank was robbed in downtown Ithaca on Wednesday afternoon, and on Friday afternoon, Ithaca police officers arrested a suspect.

IPD says the bank on East State Street, near the Commons, was robbed at about 3:11pm on October 29th, and the robber "fled the area with an undisclosed amount of cash." No one was hurt in the incident, police say.

In a media release on Friday afternoon, the Ithaca Police Department says investigators "developed information that the suspect was Ian Miles, of Cortland." IPD public information officer Jamie Williamson declined to elaborate on how investigators learned of Miles's identity.

Friday at about 1pm, police officers located Miles in the 200 block of South Cayuga Street, and secured him in police custody without incident. He was transported to IPD headquarters and booked on a single count of robbery in the third degree, a class D felony, and was then arraigned in Ithaca City Court. Miles has been remanded to Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond, though Williamson says the Tompkins County District Attorney's Office recommended $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
