Wegmans reopens after small fire in entryway on Friday evening

November 7, 2014 by Rachel Cera

No one was injured and the Wegmans supermarket in Ithaca's southwest opened again on Friday evening after a small fire in the store's entryway forced everyone to evacuate.

The Ithaca Fire Department says a malfunctioning heating unit in the entryway caught fire. Firefighters were called to the scene just past 6pm, and "found flames coming from the infrared gas-fired heater in the ceiling of the main entrance," according to a statement from IFD public information officer Lt. Thomas T. Basher Jr.

As the store was evacuated, firefighters worked with Wegmans staff to cut off the gas supply to the heater and check to make sure the fire had not spread.

The store reopened after about a half hour, after a NYSEG crew came to the scene to make sure the utilities lines were safe. The entryway heater will be kept off until Monday, when store officials say parts can be obtained to repair the unit.
