Woman airlifted to trauma center after witnesses say she jumped into Six Mile Creek

November 23, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

A woman was airlifted to a regional trauma center tonight after reportedly jumping into Six Mile Creek in Downtown Ithaca, according to the Ithaca Police Department.

Police say officers were dispatched to the 100 block of East Cayuga Street just east of the Cayuga Street parking garage when callers reported that a woman was trying to jump into the creek. Arriving officers discovered that the woman had climbed over the railing and "jumped to the concrete ledge about 20 feet below," according to an IPD release. "The victim was found lying face down, unconscious, and bleeding heavily from her head."

Police monitored her pulse and breathing while waiting for responders from Bangs Ambulance and the Ithaca Fire Department. The responders worked together to carry her out of the creek, and she was transported by ambulance to a nearby landing zone. She was ultimately taken by helicopter to a regional medical center.
