Weekend travel turns tragic for Ithaca College community as holiday weekend draws to a close

December 2, 2013

A car accident on the way back to Ithaca from Thanksgiving break claimed the life of an Ithaca College junior, and injured three others, on Sunday night. Marisa Kelly, Ithaca College's provost and vice president for educational affairs, informed the community on Monday morning.

Michael N. Clark, a 21-year-old junior English major from Boxborough, Massachusetts, was killed when he swerved to avoid a deer while driving on Interstate 88 near Cobleskill. The highway links the Albany capital district and the New York State Thruway with Interstate 81 in the Binghamton area.

Clark's passengers, junior Ezra Chamberlain, junior Melanie Pond, and sophomore Christopher Rose, wer transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained when the SUV Clark was driving overturned. Ithaca College says further information about the other students' conditions is not available as of this morning.

The College is making support services available to members of the IC community through the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services at 607-274-3136. Faculty and staff may access the counseling services of the Employee Assistance Program at 800-327-2255.
