Ithaca Generator's pop-up design studio will let you play with their laser cutter

December 4, 2014 by Allisa Lindo

Ithaca Generator’s new laser cutter gets a second outing this Friday at the Pop-Up Design Studio. Consultants and volunteers from Ithaca College’s Park School of Communications will be on hand to help attendees with creating and manufacturing their own designs on paper.

The laser cutter can create both 2D and 3D designs.

The idea for the Pop-Up Design Studio came from a meeting between IG Board President Jennifer Colt and a member of IG’s board of directors, Xanthe Matychak, and the founders of Boston-based Guerrilla Makerspace at the Scratch Conference at MIT Media Lab. Colt and Matychak brought the idea back to Ithaca and decided to host pop-up studios during First Friday Gallery Night to allow people of all kinds to create their own artwork.

Last winter, IG launched an Indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign to raise money to purchase the laser cutter. The campaign was successful and the new equipment was introduced at a previous Pop-Up Design Studio on October 3rd. On their web site, Ithaca Generator wrote, “By providing public access to 21st century tools and technologies, we increase the chances of discovering tomorrow’s brightest inventors and innovators.”

The event is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, but attendees are encouraged to donate $5. Doors are open from 5pm to 8pm at 116 West Green Street.
