Ithaca high school security officer, who made an impression on generations of students, has died

December 4, 2014 by Rachel Cera

Students at Ithaca High School observed a moment of silence this morning to remember Daniel Wells, known by many as "Boone." Mr. Wells, who served as a security officer at the school for 41 years, died early today at Cayuga Medical Center "after a brief illness," the school says.

In a message written by Jane Bryant that was read to students this morning, the school said Wells "will be remembered for his generous heart, giving spirit, and tireless efforts to make a difference in the lives of so many young people." The longtime school district staffer made a point of getting to know all of the students around him, which is reflected in the outpouring of sadness across social media today. Even IHS alumni who mention Mr. Wells having caught them doing something wrong remember the interactions fondly.

Bryant, a close friend of "Boone" and an IHS physical education teacher, also wrote, "Danny was a constant presence at athletic events for over 40 years, and helped countless athletes and coaches, assisting with regular season contests and organizing fan busses when a team made a championship run."

The flag at Ithaca High School flew at half mast today.
