A pedestrian who was struck by a car near the Burger King at East Hill Plaza was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse on Thursday evening after treatment at the scene. Ithaca Fire Department rescue personnel and Bangs Ambulance responded, along with Cornell Police and Tompkins County Sheriff's Department officers, after the man was struck by a car on Ellis Hollow Road at about 5:30.
Responders found the man lying in the roadway with passersby trying to help him. Crews shut down the roadway for about thirty minutes while rescue personnel treated the man's injuries and authorities set up a helicopter landing zone so he could be transported to a regional trauma center.
During the incident, Ellis Hollow Road remained closed to traffic, and sheriff's deputies detoured drivers through the East Hill Plaza shopping center parking lot.
Two helicopter crews were unable to fly to the scene due to weather conditions creating a low cloud cover, so Bangs Ambulance transported the patient to Syracuse for treatment of head injuries. The Tompkins County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.
