With Christmas around the corner, the American Red Cross says they're experiencing their usual holiday season lag in blood donations. "Busy schedules are leading to less blood on the shelves." Donation opportunities this week and in January are a chance to help keep the supply intact.
This week, blood drives are taking place on Thursday, December 26th at the Hilton Garden Inn at 130 East Seneca Street, from 8am to noon, and at the Brooktondale Fire Department at 786 Valley Road, from 2:30-6:30pm; and on Saturday, December 28th, at Arthur E. Bouton American Legion Post 770 in Trumansburg, from 7:30-11:30am; and at the Holiday Inn at 222 South Cayuga Street, from 11:30am to 4:30pm.
Early in the New Year, there are blood drives at the Elks Lodge at 124 Coddington Road on Thursday, January 2nd, from noon to 6pm; at the Ithaca Moose Lodge at 367 Elmira Road on Monday, January 6th, from 1:30-6:30pm; and at Homewood Suites at 36 Cinema Drive on Tuesday, January 7th, from 2-7pm.
Walk-in donors are welcome when there's room, but the American Red Cross is grateful when people make donation appointments in advance at www.redcrossblood.org.
Blood donors in December will receive a free American Red Cross long-sleeve t-shirt, and donors in January will receive a voucher good for a pound of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Donors always get a snack and something to drink to begin replenishing their fluids and blood sugar levels, and some blood drives have homemade goodies donated by local Girl Scouts troops, church groups, or others.
