Free parking throughout City of Ithaca this Thursday and Friday

Haven't finished your holiday shopping yet? Got a little free time and want to relax with friends? The City of Ithaca is making it easy to do all of the above downtown by making parking free this Thursday and Friday.

The City-owned parking garage on South Cayuga Street is managed commercially. 14850 Photo. The City-owned parking garage on South Cayuga Street is managed commercially. 14850 Photo. The free parking applies to all metered and paystation on-street parking throughout the City of Ithaca, and all four City-owned parking garages. That includes the Green Street garage, the Seneca Street ramp, and the Cayuga Street garage in Downtown Ithaca, and the Dryden Road parking garage in Collegetown.

Be careful, some paid parking is not owned by the City of Ithaca, and may not be free. Cornell University's lots that use Parkmobile or a paystation, on campus or in Collegetown, and the commercial lot underneath the Green Street garage, probably won't be free on Thursday.

Ithaca city officials say the free parking is "to encourage last-minute shoppers to do so locally, and to thank all of our businesses and residents who have successfully made the transition to our new parking equipment."

No doubt this will be great for downtown shops and restaurants on Thursday, Christmas Eve, though not much will be open downtown on Friday, which is Christmas. We suggest spending some time downtown on Thursday and buying some food-related holiday gifts!
