Community rallies to help Ithaca family left intact, but homeless, after Monday afternoon fire

December 30, 2014 by Mark H. Anbinder

No one was hurt -- including the dogs -- but a family's home and car are a total loss after a fire Monday afternoon in Ithaca's northeast. Community members, friends and strangers alike, have raised thousands of dollars to help, less than 24 hours after the fire even began.

As of late Tuesday morning, 108 contributors had pitched in over $7,700 on a GoFundMe page started by Julie Swain, an Ithaca resident and friend of the family who says they lost everything.

While there are plenty of donations of $20 and less, there are also quite a few $50 and $100 donations, and even a $500 donation to the family. An early goal of $10,000 has been raised to $12,000.

The American Red Cross is helping the family with immediate needs of clothing and shelter.
