Cornell and GIAC offer cooling centers to Ithaca community members as heat wave continues

July 10, 2010

SPLASH!SPLASH!Cornell University is offering air-conditioned space in Friends Hall, adjacent to Schoellkopf Hall on Campus Road amidst the University's athletics complex, as a cooling center for those seeking to escape the heat. The Tompkins County Chapter of the American Red Cross has also opened a cooling center at GIAC in downtown Ithaca. It's the third straight day of temperatures in the mid 90s, with another day or so of extreme heat expected.

Cornell says its Friends Hall cooling center will be available from 2pm to 8pm on Wednesday. Metered parking spaces are available in the lower level of the nearby parking garage (enter from Hoy Road) or in the lot at the east end of Bartels Hall, the fieldhouse that contains Newman Arena, home of Big Red Basketball.

The Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) is open on West Court Street (at the Beverly J. Martin Elementary School) from 1pm to 7pm today, and daily as long as the heat wave continues.

No overnight accommodations are available at either location. Temperatures overnight should cool down just enough that local residents can use fans to bring cooler outside air into their homes at night. (A fan pointed out a window, with another open window or door to draw cool air in through, works best.)

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 90s again on Thursday, but "only" the mid 80s on Friday. Forecasters don't expect the nighttime temperature to drop below 60 until Saturday night.

Cornell's campus is being chilled at full capacity again following replacement Tuesday afternoon of a chilled-water distribution pump motor that failed on Monday afternoon.

Other options for area residents looking to cool down are the Tompkins County Public Library and most other public libraries, movie theatres (Cinemapolis has evening showings this week starting at 7pm), and malls, and of course nearby public swimming pools and state parks with swimming available.
