Ithaca's RadioShack store not among those scheduled to be closed in company restructuring

After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on February 5th, RadioShack Corp released a list over the weekend of 1,784 stores it plans to close by the end of March. Ithaca's store isn't on the chopping block yet.

The company, which has operated a chain of electronics stores that dates back to 1921, is closing a first round of 162 stores by February 17th, a second round of 986 stores by February 28th, and a third round of 636 stores by March 31st.

Ithaca area schools now closed; several districts delaying or closing for the day Monday

Most school districts in the Ithaca area are now closed, after originally planning to open on a two-hour delay on Monday morning. A slow-moving snowstorm with sleet or freezing drizzle in some areas has made for heavy, wet snow accumulation and icy roads.

Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) is closed today. All day and evening classes at all locations are canceled. Students in the residence halls can get meals at the TC3 Eatery from 10am-2pm.

Did you witness this hit-and-run accident on Plain Street? Please contact IPD.

An Ithaca couple say their car was damaged by a hit-and-run driver late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. They're hoping the driver or a witness will come forward.

The Ithaca Police Department believes the vehicle that hit the couple's white Volkswagen was a blue passenger car with studded snow tires, judging by blue paint residue left behind and other evidence at the scene. The accident occurred in the 200 block of South Plain Street, near the intersection with West Green Street.

The National Weather Service says their confidence is growing that a "complex" and "long duration" winter storm will bring several inches of snow and the potential for icy conditions to Central New York. The storm is likely to bring 8-12 inches of snow to the Ithaca area.

We were relieved to hear the snow plow operator whose plow overturned in a ditch this morning was apparently unhurt in the mishap. The driver was unable to keep the plow upright while attempting to plow at the side of a rural stretch of two-lane road.

A fire on Turkey Hill Road and a fire in Collegetown were among the incidents keeping Ithaca firefighters busy on Wednesday night.

Most schools closed as snowstorm brings dangerous travel conditions

Ithaca City School District and other schools across the area are closed on Monday. The National Weather Service anticipates dangerous travel conditions this morning.

Forecasts are for snow falling early this morning at rates of 1-2 inches per hour until about 7am, and then tapering off. Blowing and drifting snow are likely through the day. Areas to our south are likely to turn to sleet or freezing rain.

A winter storm warning means it may be slow going on the way home from your Super Bowl party tonight, but the expected snowfall, with 8-12 inches forecast for Central New York through Monday afternoon, has already prompted several area school districts to close tomorrow.
