The voting ends tonight just before midnight, and Ithaca is neck and neck with Burlington, Vermont in the East Quarterfinal of Outside Magazine's 2014 America's Best Place to Live tournament. As of this writing, Ithaca has a slim lead, with 20,906 votes to Burlington's 20,890.

A neighbor noticed a house on Hector Street filling with smoke in time for Ithaca firefighters to save the west hill home from serious damage early Friday evening. The Ithaca Fire Department responded to the scene quickly, and damage to the house was minor.

Ithaca school budget passes narrowly with enormous voter turnout

The Ithaca City School District says preliminary results show that its proposed $113,774,956 budget for the 2014-15 school year passed with 62.17% of the vote in Tuesday's election. The budget required 60% of the vote to pass.

A proposed million-dollar expenditure from the capital reserved passed, as well, with 67.93% of voters approving. Three incumbent school board members, Patricia H. Wasyliw, Christopher Malcolm, and Seth J. Peacock, all won re-election to their seats.
